STO-FEN "Softie" OMNI BOUNCER
STO-FEN OMNI-BOUNCE, often called the "Softie", is an almost perfect product for the powerhouse flashguns of today. It weighs in at just 15 grams and simply clips onto the head of the flashgun. If softens the light in general use, eliminates red-eye and reflections off windows and spectacles. In more specific use it gives the delightful softness of an umbrella and all the directional coverage of a bare bulb. Very clever and now very famous. It is frequently seen on news programmes as the Omni is used by press photographers world-wide.
The Green and Gold Omni Units are used for special lighting situations.
1. The Green for Fluorescent Lighting in conjunction with an FLD or 30M filter on the Camera Lens.
2. The Gold for Warming Skin tones and for overall warming in flash filled available light shots.
3. They are mounted the same as the regular Omni for your Flash Unit.

Technical Notes for above photos: The flash use was the Vivitar 283 mounted on the hot shoe of the camera. The camera was on a tripod to maintain distance and position. The film used was 100 ISO colour negative. The lens used on a Nikon FE-2 was the 16mm f/2.8 Nikon full frame fisheye, (Which accounts for the curvature of the image) that allows the true effect of the straight on flash to be seen. The room is 30 feet wide and the Flash & Camera were ten feet from the fireplace. Both shots were made with the Vivitar set on the Red Auto Mode at f/4. The OMNI shot had the flash head tilted to 45°
What happens to the light from my flash when I use a Sto-Fen diffuser?
Flash with the Sto-Fen Omni-Bounce installed and tilted to 45 degrees gives a nice soft wrap around of light with a soft shadow behind the subject.
Flash straight on without the Omni-Bounce causes the light to go forward only and creates a harsh shadow behind the subject.
